A somewhat pointless comment, but FWIW I have now subscribed after reading LWN as a guest for (I really can't remember) a year or two and enjoying it a lot. While I resented the odd suggestion in the previous issues' comments that I was a parasite (someone offered me something for free and I took it; I didn't lie or cheat), the discussion reminded me that I'd often thought this was something worth paying for. And also FWIW, I never saw any of the text ads, I guess they were got rid of even for non-subscribers before I happened to read that issue as a guest.
