Marvell 88ALP01 data sheet released

Almost one year ago, the One Laptop Per Child project took some grief for developing device drivers for its laptop under non-disclosure agreements. It was asserted that, by giving in to hardware vendors in this way, OLPC was ensuring that specifications for the hardware would never become available. So it is nice to see that Marvell has followed through on at least part of its promise and released the 88ALP01 data sheet. This specification covers the camera, SD, and NAND flash controllers.

There _are_ some people inside Marvell fighting to make things better.
Let's hope that they keep winning! :-)

SD license?

The SD license might have something to do with the delay -- does anyone know if staying in compliance with the SD Card Association contracts had anything to do with the delay? Because OLPC is using SD I'm assuming it's in the clear for writing drivers now, but is there still anything hardware buyers needs to watch out for?

Had Marvell actually promised to release a datasheet? As I understood it, the NDA was to allow the OLPC driver writers to talk to engineers at Marvell and get information from them, and there was no expectation that a public document would come out of this (aside from the possibly comprehensible driver code). It would be interesting to know whether the creation of this document was in response to a condition of the choice of component, or to a condition on the NDA, or just due to seeing the benefit of openness (i.e., if they release the datasheet, people buy their components and use them without a large support burden or contract negotiation).

That part isn't capable of SDIO due to the block size restrictions.
