ARM may have so much volume related to the embedded market that it grabs all the mind share from developers...and thus becomes the core platform for developers.

On the subject of ARMs, does anyone know of any manufacturer who packages any of their ARM-based microcontrollers in DIPs? Hobbyists are still left a bit out in the cold otherwise - and when the choice for a breadboard fan is between paying $40 for an LPC-on-a-DIP, and asking Microchip to send you a couple of samples of the dsPIC30F4013 and dsPIC33FJ12GP202 for free... well, the ARM7 is nice, but not THAT nice. :)
