Problems switching to yearly???

Parent article: A subscription pricing change

Hi, thanks for adding this feature. However, it appears that
even though I just changed to a 12 month subscription, the
My Account page still says I'm monthly.

On another note, can we select to be automatically renewed?
(With a warning e-mail that renewal is about to happen.)
I've been reading LWN for years, and don't expect to stop
anytime soon ;-)

You need to select the option to cancel the remaining monthly renewals. The system won't try to do one for a year (since you added 12 months), but it is still poised to do so thereafter.

The only automatic renewal option is the monthly one. We would certainly get complaints of LWN.net turned up on peoples' statements a year later. I'm also amazed at how many of the monthly charges fail each time - some people, at least, seem to go through a lot of credit cards. I would not be surprised to see a failure rate of over 50% on "one year later" renewals. As much as we would like to have the authorization to snag more cash in a year, I think we have to rely on email nagging for that case.
