The Linux Platform Weather Forecast

For a little while now, LWN editor Jonathan Corbet has been working with the Linux Foundation to maintain a page called the Linux Platform Weather Forecast. The idea is to summarize developments in (mostly, but not limited to) the Linux kernel area so that interested parties can get a sense for what is coming. The Linux Foundation has gotten around to announcing the existence of this page, leading to a number of articles (1, 2...). LWN readers, of course, will not be surprised by much that is found there.

Excellent stuff - this is extremely useful. Although the content may indeed not be new to us, the scope and organisation is, and it's great.

For times when we get too busy to properly keep on top of the awesome LWN kernel page, this looks like being an efficient way to stay updated on the 'big picture', and it's very approachable.

Thanks Jon, and good luck with this new sideline!

I think it would be neat to have additional "local" forecasts based on questions people ask, like: is the iwlwifi driver (Intel's mac80211-using, mainline-suitable ipw3945 and ipw4965 driver) scheduled for inclusion yet, and, if not, when would you estimate it actually arriving (based on, e.g., activity on the mailing lists by Intel people)? The forecaster wouldn't research this level of detail normally, but it would be somewhere to report the results of any research done incidentally for other reasons.

One nit to pick: it says that KDE is at 3.5.6, but 3.5.7 was released in May.

Also, a rare sighting in there of our esteemed editor referring to himself in the
first person. :-)

Yeah, I left a comment about that errata towards the end of July but I
don't think anyone reads the "discussion" page.. ;-)

Even so, it's great work Jon!

Fair, with a freshening outlook.

Forecasting is notoriously tricky business. We wish you well in this enterprise :-)

Well, Jon have many years experience in this field - at the end of each year he makes his predictions for the next year and we all know how accurate they always are ;)

I think this will be a bit easier though :)

Congratulation Jon for this new forecasting job!

The result is absolutely outstanding.
