Sun releases new license for Java Compatibility Tests to the OpenJDK community

Sun Microsystems, Inc. has announced the OpenJDK(TM) Community Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK) License. "With this release, Sun is placing the means for certifying "Write Once, Run Anywhere(TM)" compatibility into the hands of the community. This license is for the Java(TM) Compatibility Kit (JCK). The JCK is the Technology Compatibility Kit, a suite of tests, tools and documentation that determines whether or not an implementation complies with the Java Platform Standard Edition 6 specification."

Sun releases new license for Java Compatibility Tests to the OpenJDK community

The introductory paragraph in this statement by Sun is highly misleading. The rest needs to be read with care to understand exactly what Sun is offering.

In particular: "to test complete implementations that are substantially derived from OpenJDK".

This "license" to run the java test suite therefore only applies to their own code, or minor tweaks thereof. And of course such derivatives clearly have to follow the same license as OpenJDK. There is, as you would expect, a fair bit of dissatisfaction at Apache over this. An official response to Sun will likely be appearing in the near future.

Does any other company have such a schizophrenic attitude to OSS as Sun?
