It was a fork of Wine under MIT license started after Wine switched to LGPL. Rewind is pretty much dead now. The problem with companies is that they have a short attention span and don't cooperate with each other. On the other hand, there are always some independent developers full of ideas and energy for every project worth its bytes. Generally, they tend to contribute to the code that is better protected against misappropriation.
