ATI fglrx driver does not support DRI GL rendering on more than one virtual console (unlike NVidia, which I use on my 3 virtual consoles with an X-server each).
Moreover, in ATI GL libraries there are hardcoded references to DISPLAY value :0.0. Run your X-servers, say, on vt7 and vt8, and on the latter you'll have a lot of errors especially from OpenGL software. Move from fglrx to nvidia, and suddenly all is perfect again :>
