What about Interix?

What about Interix?

Parent article: Microsoft's proclamation on GPLv3

Microsoft is distributing GPL code (Interix) and has at least one employee (or, at least, someone using a microsoft.com email address) maintaining Interix code and asking for help on FSF mailing lists. I don't know how they can claim that they aren't bound by the GPL (version 2) given that they are doing this.

Whoops, I think LWN has it wrong

I closely read the linked article; Microsoft only says it isn't bound by GPLv3, and they don't think that their work with Novell snags them. They don't make the broad claim that they aren't bound by any version of the GPL.

As far as I can tell, even distributing Interix binds them only in a limited way: if they take a patent action against one of the GNU tools they distribute, they would lose the right to distribute that tool as part of Interix.

Off-topic: What is Interix?

Sorry for veering off-topic; just out of curiosity, what is Interix? I ran a Google search and found a Wikipedia page at the top (go figure) stating that it was an optional Unix and POSIX environment subsystem for Windows NT-based operating systems (including Vista).

How is Interix different from Cygwin? Does it bear any resemblance (or relation) to Xenix? Does it use any GPL code? Is www.interix.com run by Microsoft? Thanks!
