Groklaw covers a talk by Ivan Krstic. "You have got to see this. It's the keynote talk by Ivan Krstic, OLPC's Chief Security Architect, at the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council's Open Source Summit this week. Thanks to the wonderful Dan Bricklin, we can watch the talk too. From this talk, I finally understand fully what the project is for. It's not to design a cheaper laptop. It's to create a a new way to educate. The laptop is a surrogate brain, so if a kid is curious he or she can get on the laptop and find out the answer. Is that not how children naturally learn? They have questions and they ask for answers."

If the question happens to be about how to bang chicks on a bus, the Internet is clearly the best tool to give kids for learning.

I still think the best way to help kids learn is not to give the kids laptops, but to give the teachers Internet access and instruct them on how to efficiently find information. Not only can the teacher act as a filter, but they can also act as a translation point, not just for language, but for presentation - sometimes you won't get something explained on way but you'll get it explained another, and having someone there to recognize your struggling and help clear things up is vastly more useful than giving you a little box to help you blindly search for more confusing information in a sea of porn.

Does not work this way. If you have small group (3-5 pupils) it's doable. After that... you just don't have enough time to help everyone - it's really much better to say: help each other - ask me only when you are stuck and noone except me can help! And this is if teacher knows what he's doing pretty well, if he just visited five days course once... well someone in class will be much better in that stuff then teacher.

Reality does not work that way

If I could have only learned what teachers gave me, I'd know considerably less than I do now and nearly nothing about the stuff I need every day for my job. But most importantly: I learned how to learn when school is over and there are no teachers anymore to hold my hand.

Oh, and erotic literature can be a huge incentive for a 12-year-old to learn English ;) At least much more that the boring articles they give you to read at school...

If the hard part is finding information in a sea of porn, why should you not learn how to find relevant information in a sea of porn?
