WengoPhone 2.1 gives Linux users a solid softphone (Linux.com)
[Posted June 12, 2007 by ris]
Linux.com looks at
the WengoPhone. "The OpenWengo project recently released version 2.1
of its WengoPhone VoIP softphone. It's a big step forward for Linux users.
Wengo -- the commercial PSTN-routing SIP provider that is the open source
project's parent company -- focused on its Windows builds and essentially
skipped over Linux during the 2.0 release cycle. OpenWengo's Linux
developers were never satisfied with the stability of the 2.0-series
release candidates, so they never incremented the Linux version number to
2.0."

Hmmm, I've been hopeful about Wengo for ages, and 2.1 does indeed look dramatically better. But I still have one problem, which is that it still just doesn't work for me. At all. Ever.
Sure, I could be doing something wrong, but I'm generally quite capable and don't seem to have any problem with the hundreds of other programs on my Ubuntu Feisty system;-)
Wengo still just doesn't connect, doesn't tell me why it won't connect, and yes, I've checked absolutely everything. Ekiga works fine, by the way. Previous versions of Wengo *would* connect, but the sound never worked (perhaps explained in the article). So for me, it's a great promise but a completely unusable piece of software, which is a shame....

I just happened upon Wengo the other day, and tried it out. It works fine for me. This is on Debian/sid on x86-64.
Both the Debian package "wengophone" and the package download edfrom wengo (when run in a 32bit chroot), though
the Debian package is strangely slow to start up.
With the Debian package, the little icon down the bottom keeps saying that it isn't connected, but I can make calls
quite successfully. Audio works fine. Video --- doesn't seem to understand my webcam, though kopete does.
I haven't used it a lot yet, but I'm looking for an opportunity to do so...
