Mozilla funds Democracy Player

The folks at Mozilla (whether it's "Corporation" or "Foundation" is not specified) have announced the awarding of a $100,000 grant to the Participatory Culture Foundation, which is working on the development of the Democracy Player (soon to be renamed "Miro," apparently). (LWN reviewed Democracy Player last September).

Probably a good idea to change the name. Whenever I see "Democracy Player", I think of China's government and their naming scheme:

"The Great Hall of the People"
"The People's Money"
"The People's Republic..."

Hence I think "The People's Player".

Probably a bad idea to change the name.

Because the concept behind Democracy Player is a new one, and is best described by the connotation with the term "democracy".

Plus the name change is going to dilute the media presence Democracy Player already has attained.

Debian should fork it, and keep it completely compatible except for re-branding it "Democracy Player". >;-)

Oops... I meant to delete the first sentence; after thinking about it (albeit briefly) I decided I didn't really have a strong opinion about the name, and intended to remove it. Ah well... next time I'll remember to hit Preview button once more just to be sure.

I really don't like the name, either. Very sadly, I agree it does seem to bring a whiff of manipulation -- Freedom Fries, anybody?

As for connotations with the term, they are indeed all over the free software world, not at all with this project in particular. So "DemocracyOffice", "Democracy eBook Reader", "DemocracyBlog" or "Democracy Printer Drivers" would be just as justified and just as grating.

Though, come to think of it, the term "Free" is really overworked in our world, so some help could come in handy.

On another note, by not using "Mozilla" as adjective, leaving confusion about whether it's the Foundation or Corporation, aren't they diluting their own trademark?

Maybe the trademark enforcement department is too busy nastygramming distributors to worry about policing their organization's own press releases.

Have you even looked at what you are calling a "press release"? I think "blog" in the URL should be a sufficient sign that it's not a press release. And "mozilla.com" in the same URL suggests that it's Mozilla Corporation.

Now let's hope that the Participatory Culture Foundation will award $90,000 to VLC/xine (whichever is the video viewer that plays all video formats, that the Democracy Player framework uses). And then VLC/xine will award $80,000 to ffmpeg. Because the mindboggling thing is writing an mpeg decoder.
