MontaVista Software Enables New Intel® Network Processors
Provides Sophisticated and Cost Effective Solution for Home Gateways, SOHO
Routers and Wireless Access Points
SAN JOSE, Calif., Intel Developer Forum, Feb. 20, 2003 MontaVista Software
Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, announced that
MontaVista Linux® Professional Edition will support the new Intel® IXP420,
IXP421 and IXP422 network processors unveiled at the Intel Developer Forum
that opened earlier this week in San Jose, Calif.
The Intel IXP420, IXP421 and IXP422 network processors are versatile
one-chip integrated processors that meet the needs of high-performance yet
cost-sensitive applications ranging from home gateways, small office/home
office (SOHO) routers and wireless access points, and Integrated Access
Devices (IADs), to industrial control and networked imaging applications.
The Intel IXP422, in particular, meets the security needs of networked
systems with embedded look-aside encryption/decryption engines.
³Broadband deployment is becoming increasingly common in the enterprise, the
home, and SOHO environments while, at the same time, networking services are
becoming increasingly sophisticated,² said Nick Finamore, general manager of
the Intel Network Processor Division. ³The combination of the Intel IXP4XX
product line and the MontaVista Linux OS and development environment will
help enable the next generation of sophisticated residential and SME (small
to medium enterprise) access products.²
MontaVista Linux Professional Edition is a highly scalable, embedded
operating system and development platform, suitable for a wide range of
applications and markets. MontaVista Linux provides developers with native
hard real-time capabilities, rich networking, extensive hardware support,
and hundreds of deployable utilities, libraries, drivers, and other run-time
components. In addition to complete pre-built binaries designed to support
the IXP4XX product line of network processors, MontaVista provides ready
access to source code, giving developers the freedom to customize the
platform for their target applications and unprecedented control over their
core technology. MontaVista Software will optimize MontaVista Linux and
associated development tools to take advantage of the specific architectural
features of the Intel IXP420, IXP421 and IXP422 network processors.
³With growing broadband penetration, equipment manufacturers must now
deliver advanced and sophisticated technologies at more cost-effective price
points, ² said Kevin Morgan, vice president of engineering at MontaVista
Software. ³MontaVista Linux Professional Edition offers a powerful
operating system and development environment providing a wealth of advanced
networking, real-time and development capabilities enabling quicker
time-to-market and lower costs.²
MontaVista Software is a member the Intel Internet Exchange Architecture
(Intel® IXA) Developer Network. Using Intel® IXA building blocks, developers
can flexibly customize and integrate value-add features into networking and
communications solutions. MontaVista Software is also a member of the Intel®
