Lindows Launches $799 Linux Laptop (Linux Journal)

Linux Journal looks at new laptops from Lindows.com. "One show attendee told me, "This is down in the discretionary price range--I look at it as a highly loaded Linux PDA." I'll have more of a chance to kick it around later. But from a quick once-over, it appears to be solid, which is a prime consideration for a laptop (ab)user like me."

It looks pretty cool, although I find the non-inclusion of a modem in a laptop to be pretty comical, as a business traveller and Linux-laptop user (Thinkpad X20 with Gentoo 1.4)for me a modem is absolutely essential for getting on the internet in hotels which more often than not don't have broadband connections.

It'll be interesting to see reviews of this laptop. CPU speed and graphics card are less important in these machines than things like battery life, build quality, heat issues, the level of technical support, ease of replacing components (mainly hard drive), and more obscure things like if the laptop allows PXE booting (essential if you want to get a different OS on it without buying an extra CDROM/floppy for it).

Others haven't used a modem in years.

As modems are differ slightly flom place to place, many use cell phones instead, etcetera, I think a nic is far higher priority.
Buy a pcmcia card if you need it.

Does it occur to anyone that perhaps it's unwise for lindows.com to be diversifying into hardware? This market is pretty cut-throat; small players are very liable to be gobbled up, or driven out of business, so there is a great risk to the lindows OS resulting from this.

Could do well as a first-in-market. The more well known brands can be rather slow to pick up new ideas, so someone has to prove there's a market first.
As long as they don't try to keep on when the competition gets tough, but rather sell off or give up that part of their business when time is right, this should work well.

I thought VA Research was first in this particular market.

If somebody comes out with one with a thinkpad style touchpoint, I'll snap it up.
