Actually the closed-source HAL is not really necessary. One can also run Madwifi with the OpenHAL replacement. See: http://madwifi.org/wiki/OpenHAL

The branch seems to be maintained - at least there were changes in it in april and it compiles and works with the latest kernels (just now running on 2.6.21...)
