Colorful KDE 3.1 Performance On Low-End Hardware (LinuxPlanet)

LinuxPlanet reviews KDE 3.1, using a very old computer. "People have become accustomed to the convenience and beauty of the modern desktop. However, some people shy away from packages like KDE 3.1 because they think it's going to run like frozen molasses on their six-year-old Pentium machine. Let me put your fears at ease and tell you how it works on ancient iron."

Colorful KDE 3.1 Performance On Low-End Hardware (LinuxPlanet)

"Ancient iron" typically has rather less than the 128 MBytes of memory fitted to the system used for the review. Whilst memory is relatively cheap these days, I don't think it is worth spending _anything_ on upgrading hardware on a 6 year old system ... the performance increase given by even a "bargain basement" new system compared with a state-of-the-art in 1997 system is huge.

On the other hand, there are lots of useful things you can do with systems even older than 1997 vintage which don't need _any_ sort of graphical front end!
