AMD Launches 3.0GHz Opteron Processors (eWeek)

eWeek covers the latest Opteron processor releases from AMD. "On April 4, AMD launched the Opteron 2222 SE model for two-way systems and the 8222 SE model for four- and eight-way servers. The two new models will both run at 3.0GHz and offer 2MB of Level 2 cache and the same integrated memory controller and HyperTransport technology (a high-speed chip-to-chip interconnect) as other processors in that series."

Is lwn.net the new inquirer? What's the significance of this minor speed bump?

I was just hoping to keep people up to date with news of the latest processor
releases.

Not everybody is a hardware geek here. How fast was the previous AMD model? How does it compare to similar Intel offerings? Is it 90nm or 65nm technology? What is the power consumption? Is it aimed towards business or home? How much is it going to cost? Is there anything of special interest for Linux users?

The article is either for people who already know the answers, or for those who don't understand enough to even ask those questions. Yes, I know, there are words "Linux" and "Intel" in the story.

Summarizing ...

Our processors with 8GB of RAM, an 80GB disk and Linux OS out-performs
their processor with 16GB of RAM, a 73GB disk and Windows OS. Oh yes,
and our processor running SLES9 SP3 is faster than theirs running SLES10.

And the punch line is their claim that the competition is trying to
confuse customers.

Exactly what I was wondering. Why can't they benchmark on similarly-configured systems? And if one system is linux and the other is windows, the compiler for the benchmark was most likely not the same: why wouldn't that matter?

I'll wait.

I'm waiting until Q3 of this year to see what the Quad Core Opterons look like and then decide if my next server will be AMD or Intel based.

I've ditched my desktop from an AM2 machine to an Intel based E6600 due to instability... (was impossible to get 4GB of RAM and stable on the AM2).

I wonder if the same can be said of the new Opterons just around the corner?

My guess would be that your memory problem was a problem with some particular motherboard rather than with a whole series of CPUs or even any current chipset.

As Opterons are aimed at servers and workstations (pretty much like the Xeons on the Intel side), and 4 GB isn't anything close to an extreme configuration for either of those classes, I would suppose that the surrounding hardware is tested properly with high memory configurations for both of those lines.

Then of course, there is the whole problem of which one performs better...

I have a cheapo (gaming) motherboard with an AM2 dual core and 4GB which runs just fine. I know for a fact my motherboard is very picky about RAM and was certain to only buy the recommended RAM for the board and I've been running Linux/Xen on it for months without any stability issues.
