How does KNS integrate with standard package management tools like rpm and dpkg? Should KNS be disabled by default on centrally managed systems?
I have a problem with download systems that are not integrated with the distribution packagaging system, because they make it harder to keep a system up to date with security patches. (Firefox plugins!) Every distribution system added, especially those that allow user downloads, adds to a system administrator's workload.

KDE 4 gets more Hot New Stuff Posted Mar 29, 2007 11:13 UTC (Thu) by nix (subscriber, #2304) [Link] KHNS is generally invoked by programs run by users, to install local stuff into their personal directories under ~/.kde/share; as such, the system package manager doesn't get involved. (kdelibs has long supported automatically searching these directories so apps don't need to know whether something is located in e.g. ~/.kde/share/apps/kflob or /usr/share/apps/kflob.)

Though there are exceptions, like Amarok scripts and such. Being able to sign & secure this would be nice, but yes, automatic downloading would probably also add to the safety.
On the other hand, if you see how easy many windows users install or run files they downloaded from a random site or email, it's clear where the biggest security hole is located - Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair.

Linux sustems come decently locked down and thanks to the Linux package managers, it is pretty easy to manage a set of standard tools for your users. When users start downloading and installing software locally, it complicates things for the central system adminstration.
Yes, PEBKAC is a common problem, but Linux does more to protect the sanity of system administrators.
