Motorola announces Linux handset

Motorola has announced what it claims is the first handset running Java and Linux. "The A760 is Motorola's first handset demonstrating the company's commitment to making the Linux operating system a key pillar of its handset software strategy. The strategy fosters innovative applications, which helps lead to increased revenue and differentiation opportunities for operators around the globe." Unless you live in the Asia/Pacific region, however, you will have to wait a while before you can get your hands on one.

Not "PDA" - But Mobile Phone "Handset". This is a different order of magnitude to a
PDA, especially in europe where just about every family member has a mobile phone.

With "3G" mobile networks starting to come on stream - relatively high bandwidth,
always on, you are going to a need a pretty powerful and capable handset that will allow
you to host the types of applications that 3G enables.

[p.s. The parent page says that there are 6 comments associated with this story - but I
can only see one.... deep cache or bug somewhere...?]
