While I'm always interested in seeing this digital manipulation techniques, there are two very simple ways to get shots with darker, dramatic skies without doing any post processing:

1) Use a circular polarizer
2) Use a graduated neutral density filter

Both are done in the field and have gotta take less time than this HDR stuff.
