Ideally, these images are taken with a tripod-mounted camera and cover a range of at least two f-stops above and below the nominally "correct" exposure.
This seems like a good application for autobracketing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autobracketing Once upon a time I had a Canon EOS that did this, although at the time it didn't seem to be very useful.
