Hi.
On Feb 27, you ran the story[1] that Daniel Robbins, creator of
gentoo, had returned to the project. Well, a week later he left again.
You can get the full gory details in [2] and [3].

Basically, drobbins got into an epic flamewar[4] with Ciaran McCreesh,
a popular but controversial former gentoo dev who still frequents
gentoo mailing lists. Tempers flared, and drobbins pushed for getting
ciaranm banned[5] from gentoo-dev@gentoo.org mailing list, ostensibly
on the grounds that ciaranm is no longer an official gentoo developer.
The rest of the gentoo devs refused[6] to do so. Then Daniel Robbins
quit[7] the project.

I have a humorous summary of the events in a comment[8].

-Alex Rostovtsev, longtime gentoo user.

Daniel Robbins leaves Gentoo, again

I loved this story, its not a happy ending but it does show human nature.

Coming up with tools to exclude people or pages on how you should behave really isn't the answer. Language is too subtle, you can take anything the wrong way if you are not in the right frame of mind.

Flamewars are here to stay, just sit back and enjoy the opera that is life.

Regards
Phil Hannent

The gentoo-dev mailing list has long been a source of entertainment. It's like the proverbial married couple that you see arguing and fighting all the time and you wonder how/why they stay together. And then you remember, oh yeah, maybe it's for the kids...

I personally don't see how they maintain the little cohesiveness they have. It always appears there's some kind of turf war. Everyone is fighting to get to the top of what is increasingly becoming a pile of humanure.

Conway's Law comes to mind: "Any piece of software reflects the organizational structure that produced it".

Is that why I currently have some kind of block between updates to sys-apps/pam-login and sys-apps/shadow? Because the maintainers for those packages aren't talking to each other?

It's because pam-login was merged into shadow (over a year ago actually). Try unmerging pam-login. This was mentioned in as many places as we could think of, like the changelog (emerge -avl shadow), forums, bugzilla, and planet, but it still requires you to actively look for an answer. We're working on a system to get news messages and alerts out to even the most oblivious of admins, but it's difficult when they don't even bother to look. ;)

Thanks for that! I'll keep the tip in mind for future blockages as well.

Looks like the orginizational structure of Gentoo is about as stable as it's releases...

Since you aren't a developer, you missed the (looong) discussion on banning that took place on the private developers list. Saying that "the developers" refused to do so is an exaggeration. It's more that the status quo is easier to keep than making a change, which requires significant support.
