The Road to KDE 4: Dolphin and Konqueror (KDE.News)

KDE.News presents a comparison between the Konqueror and Dolphin file managers. "Dolphin is a new File Manager for KDE 4 which is dedicated 100% to file management, and is not intended to be a one-size-fits-all tool as Konqueror currently attempts. It is intended to optimize your file management related tasks, and present an easy to use file manager for casual KDE use. That doesn't mean it won't be powerful or configurable, only that Dolphin is being built for a single purpose."

Meaning it wont replace konqueror, like kontact didnt replace kmail ?

konqueror as an application "embeddor", imho, is a good idea.

Pitty it cant be a dolphin kind of webbrowser, detachable from konqueror (more simple and intuitive interface) and able to "do" some of mozilla functionality, and why not some of mozilla extensions (why duplicate efforts ?).

A bit different. Kontact is a superset of KMail that embeds KMail via KDEs component model (KParts) along with other applications found in KDE's PIM arsenal. Konqueror, on the other hand, won't embed Dolphin in that fashion; both are seperate applications with different structures and emphasis on different modes on usage. Dolphin is geared towards file management, while Konqueror will be further geared towards browsing, while retaining the ability to invoke file system views for those who want to continue using Konq to work with the file system. What the two will share, again thanks to KDEs componentry, is the technology that implements the file views, i.e. list mode, icon mode and so on.
