that's the spirit we need more of in the community =)

we do need to be aware of the ballance between standardization (which
tends to result in (near-)ossification, which is sometimes exactly what we
need) and innovation (which is easier to do without feters like "you must
be compliant with spec X, and your changes must work with implementation
Y")

other than that, i think we are doing a better and better job of throwing
things into the community hat.

there are speedbumps at times, however. in boston earlier this month it
was suggested that we share settings for default applications. i came up
with a fairly low-pain way of doing this, the fedora packagers seemed cool
with it but the gnome developers in attendance rejected the idea. they
said that gnome and kde are different platforms anyways, so it doesn't
matter. i'm sure gnomers have encountered similar moments with other
projects, likely including people who contribute to kde (i don't know of
an example off hand, but i'm not so daft as to assume it's never
happened ;).

so, we have a ways to go as a combined community, but boy are we better
off than we were 5 years ago. =)
