For GUI applications, the Mac OS X way is pretty simple and easy: copy or delete a directory into the Applications directory, that's it. The equivalent of the Finder needs to be modified to be able to launch application bundles, and it wouldn't be very suitable for command-line programs, but for a "simple user" who uses only GUI applications, it's really all they'd need.
