SHOULD being the operative word.

How many times have we heard that... it's the reason that RPM and Debian packages exist.

Whilst compile will resolve some of the issues... it's not guaranteed to work.
Depenendicies are still in the hands of the compiler.

And just why do I want to compile that application... I see it as a waste of CPU cycles to have every user compile the same piece of code... hence the popularity of Debian/RPM distros (lets wait for the Gentoo Freaks to jump on this one!)

GoboLinux -- yeah it's LFS.. but why not just use LFS if you are going down that track?!

I had the same initial response. But if you read the article (:-)), you find that the Compile script reads a custom recipe file for each package that directs compilation and installation, and lists dependencies.

I still don't see the value, personally, but if they have enough users to justify their efforts, whatever floats your boat...
