I don't really see the need to register these laptops as much of a problem. After all, "truly free communications without fear about who might be listening" is hardy a concern for small children.
I see the microphone and the camera, and the fact that the network is always on, as more of a problem. Children will be bringing these laptops home, so there is a threat that a repressive government could use them to spy on children's parents and their guests. It's good that OLPC plans to put a LED that indicates when the microphone is on; let's hope it will be enough...
