Comparing Linux and MinixComparing Linux and MinixPosted Feb 5, 2007 20:40 UTC (Mon) by dvdeug (subscriber, #10998)Parent article: Comparing Linux and Minix
When there was a comparison of various monolithic kernels, Linux 2.4, 2.6, and the various BSDs posted on LWN sometime ago, it was clear that NetBSD and particularly OpenBSD weren't playing in the same ballpark on many tests. We're not talking about a few percent differences here; one test had three different graphs, because Linux and FreeBSD were so much better than NetBSD they were flat lines at the bottom of the graph if NetBSD was included. However, L, F, and N were flat lines on the bottom of the OpenBSD graph.
The point is, Linux 2.6 is a massively tuned and optimized system. All comparing it against Minix tells you that work in tuning an OS for speed matters, which should come as no surprise. Our previous comparisons of monolithic kernels already showed that.

Comparing Linux and Minix Posted Feb 19, 2007 18:31 UTC (Mon) by moxfyre (subscriber, #13847) [Link] So you're saying that Linux and FreeBSD are fastest, NetBSD is an order of magnitude slower than those two, and OpenBSD is an order of magnitude slower than NetBSD?
Do you have a link to those comparisons?
I am not arguing at all, but I am quite surprised by those results! I have not used NetBSD, but have used OpenBSD on a shared server and it seemed to run perfectly well on not-so-new hardware.
