Anyone considering using cramfs should read the brief Documentation/filesystems/cramfs.txt.gz file in the Linux source tree (or your distributor-provided package of Linux's documentation: try locate cramfs.txt).

http://sourceforge.net/projects/cramfs/ may have an updated version of cramfs, e.g. allowing for big-endian systems.
