I knew I forgot something: I also wanted to mention Bdale Garbee's talk on GNU Radio: software which, with a relatively small amount of hardware support, can be used to implement just about any sort of modulation scheme one can imagine. It's an important technology supporting freedom to communicate - and it looks like a great deal of fun. How nice it would be to have more time to play with things like this.
