Using Qemu (+ kqemu) makes trying out new distros really easy. If they have a LiveCD (eg Knoppix, Ubuntu, Mandriva, ...) then is is as simple as:
qemu -hdc downloaded_img.iso -boot c -m 256 -enable-audio
