Desktop Linux group launches (ZDNet)
Participants say the new consortium is in part a reaction to the behavior of one company not on the consortium's membership list: Lindows." Bruce Perens will be leading the new group.

Steve's article made this look like an anti-Lindows move. It is not. I have personally invited Michael Robertson on board, and the invitation remains open. I don't see any negatives for Lindows in their joining. Thanks Bruce

Where is FreeDesktop.org mentioned? Did Debian decline to be represented or were they left out? Really. Ciaran O'Riordan

I'm sure any other organizations and companies are free to join in...

Ximian is not the commercial arm of Gnome. It is simply one of many companies that work on Gnome, and produce distributions using code released by Gnome. Other companies that do this include Mandrake, Red Hat and Sun. Ximian's involvement in the consortium would be as representation for Ximian's interests. Not Gnome's interests (although these two do intersect in some areas).

We got an invite to be one of the founding members, but did not have enough time to investigate the details, or consult with the membership of the Gnome Foundation. Daniel Veillard summed things up in a message to the Gnome Foundation mailing list: Not being part of the initial announcement does not preclude cooperation in the future.

I am the interim executive director, presently an unpaid position. I amA bit more information
making my income from consulting about Open Source / Free Software policy and processes (and my consulting business is finally
getting on its feet).
I dont see a problem with Lindows on board either but IMHO I do not feel that Michael Robertson can work well and play with others. It seems to me through all of his dealings and I am not just referring to the Summit that all he seems to do is do things to get his name in the paper. No matter how crazy or what he has to say it seems that he is just a rabal rouser If you guys decide to have a conference and you dont let him be a keynote speaker who knows how he will react.
A bit more information
In a group focusing on GNU/Linux desktop users, where's GNOME mentioned?Where's GNOME?
RedHat?
From Reading The Fine Links I found this:Where's GNOME?
Formation committee members represent community leaders and firms that are central to Desktop Linux-related technologies. Companies and organizations announcing support for today's announcement include ArkLinux, CodeWeavers, Debian.org, DesktopLinux.com, KDE, Linux Professional Institute (LPI), Lycoris, The Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP), MandrakeSoft, NeTraverse, OpenOffice.org, Questnet (Support4Linux.com), Samba.org, theKompany, SuSE, TransGaming Technologies, TrustCommerce, Xandros, and Ximian.
My question: where's AfterSTEP?
GNOME is invited. I think they have to hold a board meeting, etc. I'm not sure anyone sent AfterStep an invitation, but they are invited now.Where's GNOME?
Someone pointed out that I bypassed the sarcasm above. That's me. IWhere's GNOME?
was just looking for my own problems and not bothering with the rest.
I looked at that comment and said to myself, "oh darn, we didn't
talk with AfterStep". FreeDesktop.org isn't really its own organization,
it's either a collaboration of GNOME and KDE or it's Havoc Pennington's
web site. I'm not sure.
that is without fee, and want to be reasonably careful about who gets
into that category - people who make real software, rather than advocacy
groups, are the target. Currently, I am representing all of the free
software projects as a voting member, just to get us through the formation
stage.
Debian and Ximian (the commercial arm of GNOME) are both mentioned on the DLC web site.Where's GNOME?

In my opinion, desktop linux can't compete with m$ without some good programming tools. Or at least well known programming tools. In that case I would like to see something like mono or gtk as part of the group.

XIMIAN is the author a distributer of Mono and libgc

Well, having both Ximian and GNOME shold take care of that.Desktop Linux group launches (ZDNet)
Hopefully GNOME will see fit to join. GTK isn't really its
own organization, is it?
