I wanted to make something more formal first..but let me just say a few
things now.

We had some problems with the hardware in a revision I had hoped would be
final. This set us back about month. So we're looking at moving the first
phones out in February now. I can promise you there is nothing "seriously
wrong."

Give me until the end of this week and I'll make a formal announcement to
this list. I'm at CES now and it's just a zoo here. I'm totally beat. It's
after 1 AM and I have to go and meet more people now.

Sure:

Standard Kit:
* 120.7 x 62 x 18.5 (mm)
* 2.8" VGA (480x640) TFT Screen
* Samsung s3c2410 SoC @ 266 MHz
* Global Locate AGPS chip
* Ti GPRS (2.5G not EDGE)
* Unpowered USB 1.1
* Touchscreen
* micro-sd slot
* 2.5mm audio jack
* 2 additional buttons
* 1200 mAh battery (charged over USB)
* 128 MB SDRAM
* 64 MB NAND Flash
* Bluetooth (yes bluetooth!)

We have two more kits that will be available (in addition to the standard
kit): A "Car Kit" and a "Hacker's Lunchbox."

The latter is quite cool. I'll tell you more about it soon.

All right! Stick it to Jobs!

Will this thing be unlocked, usable with any provider?

User hackable/programmable?

If so, it beats the tar out of iPhone in the two most important aspects.

I'll second that. I seriously looked at abusing the Qtopia Greenphone as my primary phone for that very reason. LWN, please keep us updated on this thing!

(I also like the micro-sd slot... I can always use more storage.)

Yeah - it's unlocked. And is completely hackable/programmable. The only
untouchable bit is a piece of userspace to access the GPS. These guys are
_really_ serious about freedom and openness.

Brilliant!

If the cost isn't too exorbitant, you can probably count on me buying one in the next 6 months. :)

The wait is killing me.

My current phone is nearing the end of its life, and I've been hotly anticipating ditching it in favor of the Neo1973.

C'mon little phone, just one more month...

Very exciting. Thanks for posting this.

However, I have one major request for this phone: no proprietary kernel modules. If it has even one, that's a deal-breaker for me. My Zaurus SL-5500 requires only one proprietary kernel module (the SD card driver), but that one module turns out to be quite unstable and ends up crashing the PDA. The OpenZaurus guys have done a great job in attempting to work around that module, but they have not succeeded, so the device is now collecting dust. I'm not going to buy another device with the same flaw.

Also, it would be nice if this phone had an 802.11 option so I can connect for free when in range of a wi-fi router, but that's not a requirement.

The phone does indeed have no proprietary kernel modules. Harald Welte (of gpl-violations.org) did much of the kernel work on the phone.

It does, however, have one proprietary userspace daemon, to control the GPS device. It can be removed if you want a 100% free device.

My understanding is that there's also some proprietary stuff in the radio stack, but it's hidden in a separate hardware module, so you might not want to count it. Don't know whether it's reprogrammable or permanently loaded.
