What kind of message are they trying to send to the community?

I'm reminded of a Far Side cartoon. There were four little pictures; I don't remember what they were, but three of them were animals with dangerous or pointy bits. I know one was a porcupine; one of the others may have been a cobra in full flared mode, and the other may have been a shark with an open mouth of scary looking teeth. The last was a guy standing, looking goofy, wearing a horsehead innertube around his waste. The caption read something along the lines of "Nature's way of saying Stay Away."

I make no claims about SCO, and let you draw your own conclusions :)

(Obligatory disclaimer to those who think I'm a flaming (in many senses of the word) free software fanatic with no clue about reality: so far what SCO is saying they are doing is fine stuff for the Linux community, maybe there's nothing to worry about, yadda yadda etc.)
