Closed hardware problems will not go away, however. That's why we need to rally behind the Open Hardware project, the ultimate goal of the folks who are working on the Open Graphics Card. Which, by the way, is beginning to look encouraging. If you haven't seen their news lately, check it out. There's an actual picture of a card. What I'm not totally clear on is how close this card is to the one we'll be able to buy for our PCs, or how long we still have to wait for the final product ...

It's essentially a brainless videocard (FPGA powered), and the FPGA load isn't done. So you could buy it now and hack, or buy it now and hope, or wait and buy it when they have something usable.
Something vaguely usable will probably happen sooner, while something snazzy will probably take more time.
The ASIC version will probably cost less and offer more performance, so many people will probably wait for that, which can only be made once they've hammered it out with the FPGA board.
