Nouveau driver pledge

The nouveau driver project is working on an open source 3D acceleration driver for nVidia cards. To help out the project David Nielsen has started a pledge drive. He's looking for 1000 people to each pledge $10 USD by February 8, 2007.

I don't much like this trend of starting pledges that aren't associated with the project that's benefitting; I asked the nouveau hackers on IRC how to donate recently, and they said they don't need money (they're all gainfully-employed) but they do need a lot of technical help.

(While I sound negative about this, I think nouveau is awesome, have run and helped to debug it on my own system, and my Christmas wish for FLOSS would be for nouveau to be a success..)

In their latest news update, they requested information about NVidia 8800 cards and SLI setups.

I'm guessing these funds could be used to equip the developers with these things and newer cards, when they are released?

Depending on how much comes in (the pledge was "at least 10$) it might be possible to hire someone to work on the project full-time for a month. Perhaps that would help? Or indeed, purchase hardware.

For example, by reaching an agreement with the employers of one of the
people working on the drivers to give them a month's "time off" for that.

Would be really nice to have a status update for "the rest of us" who are not hardware hackers. Are they making notable progress? Are they beginning to understand most of the hardware registers? Is there significant hope for some end-user usable fruits of this in 2007? 2008?

This is certainly a worthy and noble project and I agree we should get behind it as much as possible. But maybe we should hear from the guys themselves about their status and what they need, rather than an unafilliated plege drive. I wouldn't mind contributing money as long as I was convinced that it wasn't just "a shot in the dark."

In this Linux.com article, Keith Packard suggests that Nouveau might be ready to power 3D desktop effects for X.org 7.3.

The "NouveauCompanion" posted on the Nouveau wiki is also interesting reading for "the rest of us". Well, at least they have screenshots ;-)

It looks like there was a bit of a status update on Dec. 8th:

They say the feature matrix is no longer updated although it was last updated on Dec. 19th (maybe to remove link spam? I don't see where to get the page):

I'd rather put my money into the OpenGraphics project.

I'd rather put my money into the OpenGraphics project, where the result will continue to benefit me.

ATI's hardware has changed, and the existing open driver does not work with the latest hardware.
By the same principle, a reverse engineered NVidia driver will stop working if there's a significant hardware change.
Reverse engineering hardware to produce a driver will always be trying to play catchup. It makes more sense to fund something that will be open source from the beginning.

On the other hand, the strength of the open source world is its wild profusion of projects. If this project is successful, I will use it on the four or five NVidia cards I already own!

I'd rather put my money into the OpenGraphics project.

I'm always amazed at the way people see software project (particulary OSS ones) like something mechanic. These people are building shared knowledge on driving modern graphics cards, not just code, this knowledge doesn't exist for know. I don't think it will be useless in the future, even if some architectural changes happen.

This is a good thing. It will encourage the developers, it can provide them with resources if they need them and it will send a signal to nvidia that an open source driver is a desired thing.

Being the guy who started this I would encourage people to read my blog post explaining the reasoning behind this pledge drive.

Well according to the pledge page we've reached our quota:

Now I'm really interested to see what Nouveau developers and David Nielsen work out. Are they going to accept the money?
