A first look at Thunderbird 2.0 (Linux.com)

Linux.com looks at Thunderbird 2.0. "After many months of development, Thunderbird 2.0 is almost ready to debut. The Mozilla Foundation released the first beta of Thunderbird 2.0 last week, and I've been using it to manage my mail since then. The new release boasts tagging, history navigation, new mail alerts, improved extension support, and a number of other features. Thunderbird 2.0 won't knock your socks off with exciting new features, but it's a nice, gradual improvement over the Thunderbird 1.5 series."

Maildir Support???

I recently installed Thunderbird 1.5 on my computer, and gave up on it almost immediately due to its lack of Maidlir support. I want my mail client to be able to read all of my old email (without running a local IMAP server), and store it in a standard format that can be read by other mail clients, should I choose to switch clients at some point in the future.

As far as I know, there are no plans to add Maildir support to Thunderbird. Most Linux-oriented mail clients (e.g. mutt, Evolution, kmail) support this format so its sort of disappointing that this feature isn't considered worthy of inclusion.

Maildir Support???

+1 Loack of maildir support has been the show stopper for me from the start. I really want to us Thunderbird, but I simply will not until this changes.

Why is maildir so important? Because it is standard storage. Consider how things would be if your photo manager stored all your pictures in one big file. Or you music manager stored all your music in one big file. Just b/c mail messages tend to be small files, it makes no difference. Standard accessability is vital to future interopability.
