SUSE co-founder returns to Novell (Linux-Watch)

Linux-Watch reports that Hubert Mantel has returned to Novell. "Mantel rejoined Novell in the beginning of December. And, according to Novell spokesperson Kevan Barney, he's already hard at work. Mantel is now the team leader of the kernel QA team and he's "back in the swing of things with a full workload.""

Thank heavens for that - let's hope it's not too late to turn things around.

Interestingly, Novell's recent deal with Microsoft didn't stand in his way. Indeed, Mantel approves of the partnership. "I think it is a good thing especially for the users. If you think some years back, Linux was not taken seriously. Now even Microsoft acknowledges that it exists and will not go away," DMO quotes him as saying.

Famous words of:
Mohandas Karamchand "Mahatma" Gandhi (1869-10-02 – 1948-01-30):

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then
you win."

=> describing the stages of establishment resistance to a winning strategy
of nonviolent activism.

Yeah, right. This quote has indeed mentioned many times in here.

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then
you win. Then someone shuts a bullet at you for trying to work together with the others.

The problem is, "they" are fighting anyone but Novell.

Adolf Hitler also thought he was progressing through that nicely.

That quote goes both ways and is therefore really meaningless. That saying could be hanging on Steve Ballmer's office wall or the wall of every Microsoft employee. Who is "they"? "They" could be the Linux community. We ignored, laughed, and fought. Does that mean that MS is going to win next? And win what? Choice in operating systems is not a zero sum game.

The original quote was really meant for:

> If you think some years back, Linux was not taken seriously. Now even
> Microsoft acknowledges that it exists and will not go away," DMO quotes him
> as saying.
