I suspect you mean that this effort may have unintended side effects, or that it may not have the intended effect. Releasing the client and server code under the GNU license will allow alternative clients, written for different environments, to be written to work with the game, thus even if the original client code is MS Windows specific, or requires specific support from the graphics drivers, the game itself is no longer bound to the 3D graphics cards of note.
