I understand the FSF might see this is a great opportunity to reach out and spread the values of Software Freedom to a younger and more game-savy crowd.

But I do hope they have taken into account the production of free drivers for the main 3D card manufacturers before the client is ported to GNU/Linux.

Otherwise this effort may not have unintended side effects.

I suspect you mean that this effort may have unintended side effects, or that it may not have the intended effect.

Releasing the client and server code under the GNU license will allow alternative clients, written for different environments, to be written to work with the game, thus even if the original client code is MS Windows specific, or requires specific support from the graphics drivers, the game itself is no longer bound to the 3D graphics cards of note.

They have - Free Software drivers for 3d cards are one of their priority projects: http://www.fsf.org/campaigns/priority.html
