Well, in this case the leading 2 does mean something: it's the userspace ABI version. When Linux 3.0.0 is released, you will know that Linus's aggressive backwards compatibility guarantees have been abandoned and Linux 2.X program binaries will not work on Linux 3.X.

Not that anybody foresees this happening any time in the next decade...
