Stupidly allowing marketing to run roughshod over common sense? Is that the tradition you were speaking of? In the general case it seems to be a "tradition" in the entire industry, but Sun seems to be the "market leader" for this property manifested in version numbers.

Intel is hotly contesting this leadership with their Pentium M-based Core Duo and "Core architecture"-based Core 2 Duo.
