NetworkWorld talks with Vyatta execs about the Open Flexible Router. "Open source router company Vyatta debuted earlier this year with a Red Hat-style alternative to Cisco and Juniper offerings: the Open Flexible Router, an open source-based WAN router and firewall stack, freely downloadable, with service and support offerings available for purchase. Since then the company has generated buzz in the network industry, while releasing products such as a pre-installed appliance-like version on Dell servers. Vyatta CEO Kelly Herrell and chief strategy officer Dave Roberts recently told Network World Senior Editor Phil Hochmuth what Vyatta is, and is not, and what it hopes to become. "I'm not sure if they're pushing it all upstream but at least they are complying with GPL and seem to have the right ethos."

Not too smart with some things though. Can't view the video on the front page on this linux system.

Why do so many continue to do this? People who care about Free really need to do a better job of supporting each other.

2.6.16 is currently the only "long term supported" 2.6 version kernel (not counting distro specific kernels). It even get's driver backports from time to time.

That might be the case (well it is actually the case) but they are not even syncing those up if you have a look. But I shouldn't knock them too much as I would love for them to succeed (or somebody like them)

They are running a fairly old kernel (2.6.16)

Given the other kernel-related news on the front page (already fixed security hole reintroduced - regression testing, anyone?) I can understand that they don't go forward with the "tremendous" speed of kernel development...

And looking at what the major stable distros are currently running it is far from old: RedHat is on 2.6.9, Ubuntu LTS 2.6.15, Suse 2.6.16, and I'm even not talking about Debian :)

Debian Sarge is running 2.6.8, just one release short of RedHat.

they are planning to move to 2.6.18 for etch
