Linux lab cuts staff, focuses on legal issues (ZDNet)

ZDNet reports on layoffs at Open Source Development Labs. "CEO Stuart Cohen resigned to pursue opportunities with higher-level open-source software, and nine employees in technical and administrative roles lost their jobs, said Mike Temple, OSDL's chief operating officer and its new leader. That leaves a staff of 19, including Tom Hanrahan in charge of engineering, Diane Peters in charge of legal work, and top Linux programmers Linus Torvalds and Andrew Morton."

Indeed now Andrew works in Google. I'm not sure you can actually say he works for Google and it's possible that ODSL pays him - but I do not think that's the case: Google certainly have enough cash to pay Andrew even if he's not doing much for Google. In-house consultant of such caliber should be worth it...

Maybe they should rebrand & call themselves the OSLL (Open Source Legal Labs).

It's enough to make you weep, really.

I wondered what the new legal resources at OSDL are being used for. More and better legal advice to kernel devs? Safeguarding the OSDL patent commons project?

This recent posting on another thread by donbarry is interesting:

I have checked Guidestar.org[1], and can confirm that Stuart Cohen is indeed shown in the IRD tax forms as having a salary of US$507,278.00.

Maybe someone came to the sensible conclusion that they could get rid of Stuart, and hire half a dozen more developers? I don't mean to say that Stuart Cohen is not competent, but is OSDL the sort of organisation that needs a big-name big-pay CEO? OSDL is not Sun, IBM or Oracle...

I also see that the IRD form lists OSDL income as US$8 million, and expenses as US$10 million, so obviously some trimming was needed unless extra funds are obtained from somewhere..

[1] The registration process needed to get info out of guidestar.org is rather obnoxious; don't bother unless you really want to check.
