While I'd agree with the core of your argument, I must point out that Slackware 11 is neither obscure nor aged. While not as popular in the press as SuSE, Redhat, Mandriva, Ubuntu, et al, it has a long heritage and is still going strong, with Slackware 11 released just over a month ago.
