During the opening session of the 4th International Firebird Conference in
Prague this week, the Firebird Project officially announced the release of
version 2.0 of its open source Firebird relational database. Firebird has a
20+ year legacy, going back to the InterBase code opened by Borland six
years ago. Apart from its close conformance to SQL standards, Firebird is
famous for reliability, scalability, high-concurrency, wide cross-platform
provision, ease of maintenance and deployment, genuinely free and open
license, and its small footprint.
This new version offers many new enhancements: support for 64 bit Linux (64
bit support for other platforms to follow shortly), table sizes above 30Gb,
enhanced Unicode support, improved optimizer, improved security, execution
of dynamic SQL inside stored procedures, greater index key length, and a new
