Firebird 2.0 released
During the opening session of the 4th International Firebird Conference in Prague this week, the Firebird Project officially announced the release of version 2.0 of its open source Firebird relational database. Firebird has a 20+ year legacy, going back to the InterBase code opened by Borland six years ago. Apart from its close conformance to SQL standards, Firebird is famous for reliability, scalability, high-concurrency, wide cross-platform provision, ease of maintenance and deployment, genuinely free and open license, and its small footprint. This new version offers many new enhancements: support for 64 bit Linux (64 bit support for other platforms to follow shortly), table sizes above 30Gb, enhanced Unicode support, improved optimizer, improved security, execution of dynamic SQL inside stored procedures, greater index key length, and a new incremental backup facility.
