a statement from Bradley Kuhn, CTO of the Software Freedom Law Center,
regarding the Novell/Microsoft deal. "The Software Freedom Law
Center's CTO Bradley Kuhn has issued a statement regarding the
Novell-Microsoft agreements and how they will impact FOSS developers. They
have analyzed in particular Microsoft's Patent Pledge for Non-Compensated
Developers and see little value and in fact say it's worse than useless,
because it creates an illusion of safety and because it limits severely
what that developer is allowed to do with his work."

Kuhn's Letter to the FOSS Development Community (Groklaw) Posted Nov 12, 2006 20:04 UTC (Sun) by pr1268 (subscriber, #24648) [Link] <rant>The "illusion of safety" Mr. Kuhn talks about is exactly the FUD Microsoft is trying to put into PHBs' minds...</rant> My perception as of late on the entire Microsoft/Novell deal is that Microsoft has deep pockets with a nearly infinite supply of money burning holes in them, and they can afford to strike up some totally useless deal with the FLOSS Community just to pretend to the world that they're not all evil. After all, $344 million (or whatever the dollar amount is) could probably come from Microsoft's petty cash account.
