LVM snapshots aren't terribly useful for backups either because snapshotting / may deadlock. (It's rare, but it can happen, especially when under significant memory pressure.)
The last time I looked, the LVM docs didn't actually *say* that snapshotting the filesystem(s) on which /sbin/lvm and /etc/lvm.d reside is unsupported :/
