I think under some circumstances we could hunt down a `probable project
root' with reasonable certainty. The thing to do is to hunt downwards from
the root, directly towards the current directory, checking each directory
in turn (/, /usr, /usr/local, /usr/local/src, /usr/local/src/foo-1.95,
etc), looking first for configure.{ac,in} and then for (GNU)?[mM]akefile*.
The first such you find is probably at the project root.

This is easy to implement: I'll get around to it soon, or someone else
will :)
