Likewise on ubuntu - press the Esc key for info. (Of course, Ubuntu fails to tell you about this!)

kernel parameters:
splash=none #Old style messages in text.
splash=verbose #Pretty, but with information.
splash=silent #Progress bar only.

Well my install of Kubuntu 6.10 DOESNT respond to the ESC key during startup and shutdown.

It also hangs on reboot. (Not shutdown, just reboot)

I'm working on the ATI driver issues now.
